Petrified wood from Egypt - rare

The petrified wood from Egypt dates back to Oligocene epoch (~35 Mill. years). Up to now there is no exact determination of the wood.

The colours are mostly bright yellow-ochre and sometimes brown with red and grey. There are no roots, small limbs or petrified leaves found in this petrified forest. The desert near Cairo is rich with petrified wood. The layers are claimed to formed by one of the ancient branches of the river Nile. It carried the logs along and threw them into that place where they were buried and covered by volcanic ash.

Full rounds are rare! The petrified forest of Cairo is a National Park and stringent protected. Petrified wood from Egypt is not often seen on rock shows.

Pieces offered here are from the Western Desert between Cairo and Bahariya and not from the protected "Petrified Forest" near Maadi, Cairo
